what does it mean when your mail is marked “USPS Hold For Pickup” or “HFP”?

When a package is delivered to you and the delivery person can’t make it to the door, they will use one of those yellow Hold For Pickup tags placed on your door. The sticker indicates that they cannot deliver your package and need somebody to come get it.

Once this tag is applied, you have until 8:00 pm on the same day that the mailman tried to deliver the item. If you didn’t get to your door in time, the package will be returned back to the post office.

However, if you can’t make it out to your mailbox on time (due to work or any other reasons), you can also authorize some other person who lives in your home or somebody you trust who has a signature card on file with the post office.

If somebody comes to your house and picks up a Hold For Pickup item, they must have a proper ID and give their name and address and they will be eligible to receive the package.
